How to calculate the strain in a beam?

Apart from getting the knowledge from some good engineering books, it's always better to browse the You tube website for some excellent videos that show us how to learn the engineering concepts visually looking at the physical aspects.

I found the following videos very useful to learn how the strain in a beam is calculated. These videos have got some wonderful graphical explanation of how the beam bends in reality, though the deformation of the beam is amplified to a larger magnitude to demonstrate the concept visually.

Video 1: Strain in a Beam (of symmetric Cross-section)

Video 1: Strain in a Beam (of non-symmetric Cross-section)

The above videos were created at University of Waterloo for Civil Engineering in Mechanics of Solids.
